This workshop will feature a talk by Dr Matthew Shardlow, a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, followed by an open discussion. Dr Matthew Shardlow’s research over the past 10 years has focused on Natural Language Processing (NLP), and he has followed the developments that led to the latest release of ChatGPT with interest. Within the NLP field, Matt’s three key interests are in text simplification, the use of Emoji as part of everyday language, and the application of Text Mining to varied disciplines including Chemistry, Neuroscience, Journalism and Finance.
The Special Interest Group (SIG) in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence for Education (https://www.mmu.ac.uk/research/research-centres/cfacs/machine-intelligence) sits under the Centre for Advanced Computer Science (CfACS) and is led by Dr Annabel Latham and Dr Andrew Schofield. The SIG hopes to promote closer relationships between researchers interested in Computer Science education and Artificial Intelligence in Education. Our team conducts research into conversational intelligent tutoring systems and new systems for assessing the programming language SQL at undergraduate level. We place a strong emphasis on the ethical implications of the use of AI in the general field of education. The SIG hopes to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations in terms of sophisticated data analysis, grant collaborations and ultimately, ambitious research projects.
